An innovative and amusing approach to learning French
If you’re making little or no progress in your French, find the grammar hard to understand, grind to a halt in mid-conversation, then this course will give you the help you need.
Everyone with a very basic understanding of French will benefit from this course. From those of more mature years, perhaps now living in France, who need to communicate with neighbours or officialdom to those who may be a little younger but have forgotten much of what they’ve previously learnt.
How Boney French came about
After what seemed a life sentence teaching French in a large secondary school where the children thought the Common Market was held on Tuesdays, Roger Ayling retired to France and learnt to laugh again. After a while he began to give lessons to many of the local English speaking community and gained a valuable insight into the problems and worries that they faced. That’s when he first started to develop this down to earth and humorous approach to learning French. Eventually, using all that he’d learnt about the problems many of us face when trying to speak French, Roger self-published a book which went on to sell almost 1000 copies.
The thinking behind Boney French
- TO GET THE MAXIMUM UNDERSTANDING FROM YOUR LISTENER WITH MINIMUM EFFORT FROM YOU
- TO REPLACE THE ERRORS YOU WOULD MAKE ANYWAY – EVEN AFTER A GREAT DEAL OF STUDY – BY
- DELIBERATE CONTROLLED MISTAKES – WHICH ARE NO MORE SERIOUS, AND OFTEN LESS SO, THAN THE ONES MADE BY MANY PEOPLE WHO SPEAK FRENCH EVERY DAY
Over the years of teaching French, Roger found that many people, both young and old, feel inhibited about speaking it because they are frightened of making a mistake. Unless they can be sure they are completely right, they prefer to say nothing, thinking that they will be laughed at.
This is the wrong attitude, not only to speaking French, but to Life itself.
Look at the mistakes we’ve all made; cake burnt on one side; no tea bags in pot; hole drilled in wrong place; dates and times confused; vital ingredient forgotten. I tried to phone my bank using the TV remote. We don’t agonise over these mistakes – why should it be different when speaking French which is much harder than any of the above?
The Boney French Speaker knows he is making mistakes but is aware that he is thereby getting his meaning across. He doesn’t worry about this but bashes on, gaining the listener’s understanding and admiration.

What People are Saying about Boney French
“Thanks for your follow-up. I have already embarked on Boney and am thoroughly enjoying it. I sit in the Senior Student bracket with a sketchy knowledge of French and a diminishing recall ability, but you definitely take a lot of the fear out of it.
My husband is French (don’t ask why I don’t speak French!) and even he concedes that much of what I have been trying to learn up until now would seldom come in handy whereas your method will allow me to make myself understood and give me far greater confidence.”
“It’s like a light going on. Not much masc/fem and no worry about verbs. Bliss. I love it. Have quite good vocab but the grammar has always been beyond me re verbs.”
“Boney French” has managed to take the lonely slog out of learning the French language by replacing it with encouraging and humorous guidance. This is the perfect companion to those who didn’t pay attention at school but also to those who did but have lost it all along the way, either from lack of use or want of necessity. For those of us who feel they are past the old dog/new trick stage it is a boon, as it is so practical and simplified that it would qualify as anyone’s comfort zone. I can recommend this ‘bijou’ of a course to students of all ages and at all levels. Be ready for an agreeable surprise.
“Great little fun course and so quick to pick up. No more past historic or future present etc – just be understood with a smile.”
“Just started work on Boney French which was recommended by a friend. I’ve made more progress in a week than ever I did with the other courses I’ve tried. My wife and I bought a house in Brittany three years ago and we both struggled with the language. When we go back for the summer, I know we’ll be able to chat to our lovely neighbours and get much more fun from our holiday. Thanks Boney!”
“… I’m finding everything very useful, many handy tips and the humour is marvellous, making it all very easy and fun.”
Venetia Harwood Pearce
“…a really good book and easy to follow.”
Lee Ann Bradshaw
“Thanks again for a well written, occasionally amusing and helpful book.”
“I’ve now completed the first section and I already have more confidence as it has given me a different way of thinking about my French (or lack of it). Our French friends say I am using more words already.”
“Well written in an easy to read style. Yes, will help my everyday French no end.”
